7 June 2016 - The Non-Governmental Organisation Coordinating Council –NGOCC Southern Province has welcomed the adoption of a model law on eradicating child Marriage Southern African Development Community -SADC.

And NGOCC Southern Province Coordinator Mary Luneta has appealed to government to quickly domesticate the model law to help reduce cases of child marriages.

Last Friday SADC Members of Parliament adopted a model law on eradicating Child Marriage and Protecting Children who are already in Marriage.

This was during the 39th parliamentary Assembly Forum in Swaziland where Zambia was also represented.

Mrs. Luneta said it is only through stiffening of laws against child marriage that the girl child will have an opportunity to a bright future and live a fulfilled life.

She if the law is not stiffened, cases of Gender Based Violence, gender inequality and fewer women participating in decision making will never be overcome.

Mrs Luneta said NGOs and other stakeholders still have a lot to do to combat cases of child marriages especially in rural areas
