Dear colleagues and friends,
The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) is a Committee of 11 members that is mandated to monitor and report on the rights of children in Africa. This is a potentially powerful watchdog and advocate for children. The terms of six out of the eleven members will come to an end in July 2010. Therefore, we, as civil society could have a role in suggesting qualified candidates to our respective governments. In the last election very few candidates were nominated for these important posts. Therefore, we have a great opportunity to influence the process and ensure that more people of high caliber are nominated for the posts. The nominations have to get to the AU Legal Affairs Department by the end of February… so we need to act quickly.

Chers collègues et amis,
Le Comité Africain d’Experts sur les Droits et le Bien-être de l’Enfant est un Comité de 11 membres qui sont chargés de faire un suivi et des rapports sur la réalisation des droits de l'enfant en Afrique. Ceci est un organisme de surveillance et de pleidoyer pour les enfants. Les mandats de six des onze membres s'achèveront au mois de juillet 2010. Donc, nous, comme la société civile pourrions avoir un rôle en suggérant des candidates appropriès à nos gouvernements respectifs. Lors de la dernière élection très peu de candidats ont été nommés a ces postes importants. Donc, nous avons une grande occasion d'influencer le processus et de garantir que plus de gens de haut calibre soient nommés pour les postes. Les nominations doivent arrivent à l'UA au Département d'Affaires Légales d'ici a fin février… nous avons donc besoin d'agir rapidement.
