On the eve of the celebration of African Child Day yesterday Minister Zenebu Tadesse said that the government has taken various steps including adopting of policies and directives to promote the right of the child.
“The policies and directives we adopted were prepared in cognizance of international conventions on the right of child,” Zenebu said.
The Africa Child Day, which is marked for the 20th time in Ethiopia, is being commemorated for three days under the theme ‘Let us Provide Community-Based Support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children’.
“The day will be marked in all the regions by raising the public’s awareness and providing care to orphans and vulnerable children,” the minister said.
The African Child Day is held each year on June 16 to remember the 1976 massacre of African children in Soweto, South Africa. It was initiated during the 26th assembly of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) to remember the killing of thousands of school children who took to the street protesting the inferior quality of their education and demanding the right to be taught in their own language.
