12 October 2012 - Afro-fusion star Suzanna Owiyo yesterday launched a brand new single for Plan International's Because I Am A Girl campaign in Ethiopia.
Suzanna was joined at the launch by South Africa's Yvonne Chaka Chaka and African music legend Oliver Mtukudzi of Zimbabwe in Addis Ababa.
The song, titled Because I'm A Girl, calls on girls to stand up for their rights and highlights the fact that girls need protecting. The launch of the campaign song coincides with the first ever-International Day of the Girl Child.
The song has been recorded in English, Swahili, Arabic, Portuguese, Shona and French to popularise the campaign throughout Africa. It highlights the challenges girls face across the continent, where millions of teenage girls are pushed out of school through forced or early marriage, gender-based violence and discrimination.
Plan is launching the worldwide Because I Am A Girl campaign to directly support four million girls across the world, and indirectly help millions more, to get the education, skills and support they need to move from poverty to opportunity. Leading mobile phone network operators in Africa are helping to distribute the new campaign single as a free downloadable ringtone.
