NIGERIA: Legal Aid Council Holds Workshop on Child Rights

Worried by increasing denial of basic rights to the Nigerian child, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria will organize a workshop on Thursday to raise awareness on the position of the law and its implications.

The forum, which holds at Rockview Hotel, Abuja, is part of a country-wide sensitization project tagged "In the Best Interest of the Nigerian child".

"The objective of this project is to educate our children, parents, teachers and the society on the rights and duties of a child, most especially as encapsulated in the Child Rights Act," said the director general of the council, Mrs. Joy Bob Manuel.

The council has chosen two primary schools in 27 states and the FCT on a pilot basis for the project which seeks to educate young persons on the provisions of the law, the duties and obligations of parents, guardians and the society.

Mrs. Bob Manuel disclosed that the council is collaborating with the International Federation of Women Lawyers, and Aduvie Montessorri International School, Abuja.
